International Conference on Modern Age Fortifications of the Mediterranean Coast10-12 November 2016, Florence – call for papersFORTMED 2016 is the International Conference on Modern Age Fortifications of the Mediterranean coast. This is its second edition following the first opening in Valencia in October 2015.The conference will take place on November 10th, 11th and 12th 2016, at the Dipartimento di Architettura (DiDA) of the Florence University (UNIFI). The conference’s main objective is the exchange of knowledge and sharing for the better understanding, assessment, management and exploitation of culture and heritage that developed on the Mediterranean coast in the modern age, taking into account the wide distribution of these results. AbstractsTo present a paper at the conference is necessary to make an abstract of 2000 characters (with spaces) or less, with title, name, affiliation, key words, topic and email address of the authors. Sunken water-going vessels are time capsules filled with material evidence related to trade, warfare, migration, and technological development. All if this is often overshadowed in the public consciousness by fantasies of finding rich treasure. This session will look at recent underwater research around the world, with particular attention to African, Near Eastern, and Asian regions. But in recent years, heritage designations at the international, national, regional and local levels are beginning to reflect the fact that nature and culture are indivisible. This is true for the application of all of heritage’s associated disciplines: landscape, architecture, archaeology, folklore, ethnobotany, history, ethnography, planning, agriculture and public health, just to name a few. In fact, there is probably no discipline in the humanities, social or natural sciences that is not affected by either culture, nature or, more often, both.This three-day conference is the 7th in a series of annual conferences exploring the relevance of heritage in present-day society. This year’s conference is sponsored by the Center for Heritage & Society at the University of Massachusetts, in conjunction with the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the Czech University of Life Sciences.
