Call for Papers2016 Advisory Committee Symposium20 October 2016, Istanbul, TurkeyPOST-DISASTER RECONSTRUCTIONThis year’s symposium addresses the destruction of cultural heritage through natural disasters and armed conflict. The destruction of places of symbolic value has long been a device of war, with societies and civilizations overturned and their artefacts dissipated and destroyed. We are currently witnessing the the deliberate destruction of cultural heritage through armed conflict in many parts of the world.Increasingly we are also witnessing the destruction of heritage places through severe natural disasters that are expected to increase as climate change generates extreme weather events. The theme of POST-DISASTER RECONSTRUCTION is extremely relevant as societies impacted by natural disasters, terrorism and war seek to rebuild themselves and request external assistance. This brings with it many challenges and risks, as well as possible opportunities.ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINESAbstracts for papers and posters are expected to be short documents which contain a clear statement of the topic, the research question and examples of clear case studies and good practices. The content of abstracts for submission should include:- Clear objectives- Methodology- Summary of key findings and recommendations- A short outline of historical and contemporary case studies relating to your topic.Abstracts should be submitted in English or French.
Recording the physical characteristics of historic places and landscapes is a cornerstone of preventive maintenance, monitoring and conservation. The information produced by such work guides decision-making by property owners, site managers, public officials, and conservators. Rigorous documentation may also serve a broader purpose: over time, it becomes the primary means by which scholars and the public apprehend a site that has since changed radically or disappeared. With this in mind, CIPA was founded in 1968 jointly with ISPRS (International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) to facilitate the transfer of technology from the measurement sciences into the heritage documentation and recording disciplines. CIPA’s mission is to encourage the development of principles and practices for the recording, documentation and information management for all aspects of cultural heritage; and to support and encourage the development of specialized tools and techniques in support of these activities. They are pleased to invite you to participate in CIPA2017, the 26th biennial symposium, being held from August 28 to September 1, 2017, in Ottawa, Canada. CIPA2017 will focus on Digital Workflows for Conservation.Important dates: 1 December 2015 – 1st call for papers 1 March 2016 – 2nd call for papers 1 June 2016 – 3rd call for papers 1 September 2016 – 4th call for papers 1 January 2017 – final call for papers 1 February 2017 – deadline to submit abstracts Mar 31, 2017: Notification of acceptance of abstracts April 30, 2017: Deadline to upload full papers May 15, 2017: Notification of acceptance of reviewed papers June 15, 2017: Deadline to upload non-reviewed papers and posters July 12, 2017: Deadline for submission of corrected papers July 12, 2017: Deadline to upload non-reviewed papers and posters Symposium: August 28 – September 1, 2017For more information, please visit: http://cipaottawa.org/

ICCROM is pleased to announce the publication of the position papers arising from the findings of the ICCROM Forum 2013 on Conservation Science. The Forum was a notable initiative of ICCROM and 15 other leading heritage institutions from around the world. This publication is produced in collaboration with IIC as a special supplementary issue of Studies in Conservation.ICCROM’s Director-General, Dr. Stefano De Caro, has made the following comments on this occasion: “The position papers contained within this volume are reflections which build upon the vivid and diverse discussions of the ICCROM Forum 2013 on Conservation Science. The Forum has been a breakthrough in refocusing ICCROM’s mandate in this field and in strengthening our collaboration with major scientific and conservation institutions worldwide. The scope was ambitious, looking towards a reform of the heritage science field to meet the emerging needs of cultural heritage conservation and through them, societal needs, while at the same time promoting openness, and accountability.ICCROM is pleased to join efforts with IIC to publish this special supplement to Studies in Conservation, which represents an important collaboration between our two organisations. The Forum was a venue for critical reflection engaging more than 80 heritage professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines, responsibilities and cultures within cultural heritage conservation. ICCROM is grateful to all those who participated in the development of this seminal event. We hope that the ideas and aspirations which evolved from those days and are captured in this publication will lead to lasting positive change within our field.”Download the full Studies in Conservation supplement
